New Years Day 2008. A day people all over the world were making resolutions, and being hopeful about the days to come. It was also the day Meredith Hope Emerson 24, left her home in Buford, Georgia to go hiking in the Appalachian Trails. Never to return again.

Meredith set out on Blood Mountain in Northern Georgia with her dog Ella, both experienced hikers. It was just to be a day hike to get them out into nature and breathe in some fresh mountain air.

Other hikers had spotted Meredith in the company of an older man on Spur Trail which connects the Appalachian Trail to the Byron Herbert Reece Parking lot where she parked.

In the afternoon, a hiker Seth Blankenship found what looked to have been a fight scene on the trail. The trail itself looked torn up, water bottles left on the ground, a leather dog leash, sunglasses, a police baton, and a women’s hair barrette seemed to be thrown around the area.

Moments before Seth came upon the scene, he had actually spotted Meredith with an older man. Meredith had been carrying the leather leash, and the man had a hold of the police baton he now found on the ground. Taking in the scene before him, Seth knew something was wrong.

Bill Clawson walked upon the torn-up scene a moment later and agreed he thought something was wrong too. He also noticed an older man right before, that looked to be impatient as if he wanted the other hikers on the trail to leave. Bill helped gather up the things found and took them to a nearby store to turn in.

On January 2 the lives of all who knew and loved Meredith Emerson would drastically change. That’s when the news of her not returning home let them know that something was very wrong.

Her roommate alerted Meredith’s boyfriend who drove straight to Blood Mountain, where he knew she had been hiking. Thinking that she might have gotten snowed in and spent the night, he still had hope that everything was alright. Arriving at the parking lot, he saw her car. It…
